Taking a look at the new Wien Museum

Refurbishment and extension works have been underway at Wien Museum at Karlsplatz in Vienna since July 2020. Reason enough to take a (video) peek at the construction site – from the perspective of the BIM manager who has been supporting the project since last year.

The BIM manager from pde is the first point of contact for any issues related to BIM. He also developed a holistic BIM strategy based on the requirements of the client, i.e. the museums of the City of Vienna. In addition to the BIM-based coordination, he is also responsible for organising partial models for the design and planning of building services, fittings, and installation as well as for the steel construction. A consortium of PORR Bau GmbH, Elin and Ortner is set to complete the extensive renovation and extension of Wien Museum by 2023.

The heritage-protected Haerdtl building will be extended with a new two-storey construction designed by architects Certov, Winkler + Ruck, that will float above the existing building. This will practically double the museum’s available floor space. The entrance area will be redesigned with a pavilion while the building will open onto Karlsplatz with the addition of a restaurant and plaza.
